U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that the Maine State Ferry Service has been awarded a grant of $643,500 for the Rockland Ferry Pier. The funds come from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration. They will be used to rehabilitate and expand the Pier in Rockland. Additionally, the project’s funds will improve the timeliness and connectivity of the intercity and local bus service.
“This is fantastic news,” noted Senator Snowe and Senator Collins in a joint statement. “The Rockland Ferry provides a critical service to the residents of Vinalhaven, Northhaven, and Matinicus. This grant funding will greatly benefit the users of the Ferry.”
From the terminal in Rockland, the Maine State Ferry Service offers daily and year-round service to the islands of Northhaven, Vinalhaven, and weekly service to Matinicus.
