As the former Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Senator Collins has championed efforts to enhance the ability and preparedness of first responders, worked to address the issue of homegrown terrorism, and sounded the alarm on the vital importance of enhancing our nation’s cybersecurity. Collins, King Announce $625,000 in Police Funding for Maine

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has awarded four Maine police departments a total of $625,000 to hire police officers. WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory will receive $345,649 in grant funding through the U.S. Department of Justice’s DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program. Collins, King Announce $240,595 for Bucksport Fire Prevention and Smoke Detector Installation Program

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced today that Bucksport will receive $240,595 for the Bucksport Fire and Emergency Medical Services’ Fire Prevention and Smoke Detector Installation program. The grant will help cover the cost of purchasing and installing 10-year smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors for approximately 2,400 homes in Bucksport and Verona Island. During the installation, firefighters plan to offer residents a brief fire prevention home inspection and provide important fire safety information.

U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME), members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, cosponsored bipartisan legislation that would establish an independent National Commission on Security and Technology Challenges. Senators Collins, Leahy Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Stop Gun Trafficking, which Contributes to Maine’s Heroin Crisis

U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced the Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act, legislation that aims to strengthen federal law to make it easier for law enforcement to prosecute gun traffickers.  Traffickers target individuals who can lawfully purchase firearms and then use those weapons in other crimes.  This practice contributes to Maine’s heroin crisis, since criminals will often give individuals drugs in exchange for firearms.

Collins, King Announce Application Period for Assistance to Firefighters Grants

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Susan Collins, Co-Chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, and Angus King, a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will begin accepting applications for grant funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program on Monday, December 7th at 8:00 a.m. The application period will close on January 15, 2015 at 5:00 p.m.
