SENATORS SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE GRANTS FOR AIDS PREVENTION AND RESEARCH

              U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD’s and TB Prevention (a division with in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) has awarded an $82,787 grant to the Maine State Department of Health and Human Services in Augusta for AIDS prevention, surveillance and research activities.               “Scientists continue to make dramatic advances in researching and treating AIDS,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.  “We are pleased that important research is currently underway here in Maine and we must work to ensure that health professionals have all of the necessary resources to continue and enhance their efforts in the fight against this devastating disease.”               According to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, there are currently more than 1,500 living with HIV in Maine.     ###
