U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that Womancare, a Piscataquis County-based domestic violence support cooperative, has been awarded $170,000 in grant funding through the USDA Rural Development’s Community Facility Grant Program. The funding will be used to help construct a new facility that will house Womancare, its staff, and its clients.
“This grant is fantastic news,” noted Senator Snowe and Senator Collins in a joint statement. “This funding will provide needed assistance to a community cooperative that provides a number of services to victims of abuse.”
Womancare currently provides services to families affected by domestic abuse, including a 24-hour helpline, safe homes, support groups, advocacy services, court accompaniment, transitional housing, transitional housing, and community and school-based education programs. Womancare works closely with local law enforcement, the medical community, schools, and social service agencies, helping create a collaborative response to issues of domestic violence.
