U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins announced today the University of Southern Maine has been awarded a grant of $151,450 from the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Competition to Prevent High-Risk Drinking and Violent Behavior Among College Students Program.
“This funding will greatly benefit the University of Southern Maine and its students,” noted Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “A recent study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration concluded that over 40% of Mainers between the ages of 18 and 25 reported binge drinking in the last month. Our young people are putting themselves at serious risk with their actions.”
The Competition is designed to prevent high-risk drinking by limiting students’ access to alcohol from peers and decrease the willingness of college students to host parties which facilitate high-risk drinking. The project also hopes include campaigns to change social norms and behavioral intentions around furnishing alcohol to minors.
