SENATOR COLLINS RECEIVES AWARD FOR SUPPORT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senator Susan Collins was today presented with the "2004 Triangle Coalition Outstanding Legislator Award" for her support of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education efforts. The award was presented by the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education, which aims to improve the quality and outcome of mathematics, science and technology education. Organization members include the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance.

"It is an honor to receive this award," said Senator Collins. "To keep up with the needs of the workforce of today and tomorrow, it is important for students to gain a strong foundation in the areas of science and technology. This education will lead to good paying jobs in Maine and throughout the nation," Senator Collins added.

The Triangle Coalition represents key organizations from the business community, education and science and engineering societies.

Senator Collins was presented the award for her work on behalf of the organization''s mission and includes her support of funding for the Challenger Learning Center in Bangor. In addition, she has been a lead supporter of efforts in the Senate to increase funding for the Math and Science Partnership program at the Department of Education.
