COLLINS SUPPORTS PROPOSAL TO DELAY BASE CLOSURES

Washington, DC - Following House approval today of a bill that would delay the military Base Realignment and Closures (BRAC) process, Senator Susan Collins expressed her support for the proposal, saying:

"The current BRAC process is flawed. In addition, now is not the time to close and reorganize our military bases when the country is in the midst of a war and our future force structure needs are unclear.

"Therefore, I support the House proposal to delay BRAC for two years. Unfortunately, I believe it faces an uphill battle in the Senate. But I will continue to support efforts to stop BRAC until we can create a better process for determining whether there is excess capacity in our system of military bases, keeping foremost in mind the needs for defense and homeland security."
