SENATOR COLLINS HONORED BY ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION

WASHINGTON, D.C.—During its fourth annual National Alzheimer’s Gala in Washington, D.C. this week, the Alzheimer’s Association presented U.S. Senator Susan Collins with its prestigious 2007 Chairman’s Leadership Award.  Senator Collins shared the award with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.  The senators are co-chairs of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease.               “Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that takes a tremendous personal and economic toll on both the individual and the family.  It is an agonizing experience to look into the eyes of a loved one only to receive a confused look in return,” said Senator Collins.  “We are, however, making real progress.  Our investments in Alzheimer’s research have begun to pay dividends, and effective treatments are tantalizingly within our grasp.”               The Alzheimer’s Association presents its annual gala to raise the profile of Alzheimer’s disease and its devastating toll on America’s families and to recognize advances in Alzheimer research.               There are now more than five million people in the United States living with Alzheimer’s disease.
