SUBCOMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS ANNOUNCED FOR SENATE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a development that is critical to shipbuilding and other defense-related interests in Maine, Senator Susan Collins today secured her position on the Seapower Subcommittee of the Senate Armed Services Committee for another two years. Collins, who is now the only member of the Maine Congressional Delegation to serve on an Armed Services Committee in the Senate or the House, requested to retain her seats on the following subcommittees:

Seapower, Emerging Threats, Personnel

"It is of the utmost importance that Maine have a voice not only on the full Armed Services Committee, but also on the Seapower Subcommittee," said Senator Collins. "Making sure that Maine's interests are represented when it comes to issues such as shipbuilding, military bases, and other defense-related issues has been a traditional mission of the Maine Congressional Delegation and I will continue that mission."

Senator Collins has served on all three subcommittees for the past two years. Her work on the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats dovetails with her work as Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees the Department of Homeland Security. Each area deals with the post 9-11 reality of new and yet to be identified threats to our military and domestic security.

The Personnel Subcommittee is of interest to the Senator due to its focus on the needs of military personnel and ways in which the quality of their lives in the military can be improved, especially in the areas of pay, benefits, housing, and health care.
