Statement Of Senator Susan M. Collins On The Nomination Of Governor Tom Ridge As Secretary Of The Department Of Homeland Security

"The President's choice of Tom Ridge to become Secretary of Homeland Security is not only logical, it is an excellent one. Tom Ridge has proven his ability to provide strong leadership to the daunting task of securing our homeland.

"In the immediate and uncertain days following September 11, 2001, President Bush called on Governor Ridge to lead the homeland security effort. Where others may have hesitated at the enormity of the assignment, Tom Ridge embraced it and immediately set about rectifying lapses in our nation's security.

"There is much more to be done, and I support the President's choice of Tom Ridge as the person to take the lead in getting the job done. I look forward to presiding over Governor Ridge's confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and working with him in establishing the new Department."
