SNOWE, COLLINS APPLAUD MAINE HIGHWAY SAFETY ALLIANCE

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today applauded efforts by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to protect roadway and construction workers in Maine. A new alliance spearheaded by OSHA has been created to develop and deliver training and education programs on roadway work zone safety and health. OSHA, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Maine Bureau of Labor Standards' 21 (d) Consultation Project, and Associated Constructors of Maine, Inc. (ACM) have joined forces in this task.

"We applaud the Administration for bringing this task force together to improve the health and safety of roadway and construction workers throughout the State of Maine," Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. The alliance will provide training on construction safety and health issues, including trenching, landscaping, silica, falls, and electrical hazards. They will also enhance information sharing to prevent hazards and encourage participation in OSHA cooperative programs, including compliance assistance, voluntary protection programs, safety consultation, and the Safety and Health Achievement Program (SHARP).
