SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE SEA GRANT FOR UNIVERSITY OF MAINE ORONO

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan M. Collins (R-ME) today announced that a grant totaling $983,300 has been awarded to the University of Maine Orono by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as part of the Sea Grant program.

"As residents of a state with 3,500 miles of coastline, it is essential we continue to preserve, protect, and explore our coastal ecosystems," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "There is no better institution to carry out this research, education and outreach than the University of Maine Orono, which has a proven track record of positive community interactions and groundbreaking research."

The Maine Sea Grant College Program carries out a comprehensive program of research, education and outreach. Major areas of emphasis include: ecosystem health, aquaculture, and fisheries. Major emphases of the outreach program are: coastal community development, aquaculture, ecosystem health, fisheries, and teacher and youth education.
