SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS FROM MAINE

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced Jesse Kaplan of Brunswick and Bethany Roy of Cape Elizabeth will be recognized as Presidential Scholars in Washington, DC this June.

As part of the United States Department of Education, the Presidential Scholars Program invites high school students around the nation to apply for recognition based on outstanding College Board SAT or ACT assessments as well as high school reports, transcripts and extracurricular activities. There are a total of 141 Presidential Scholars, including one young man and one young woman from each state.

"We are pleased to congratulate Jesse and Bethany for being chosen as Maine's representatives in academic excellence for the 41st class of Presidential Scholars. This prestigious award highlights their exceptional record in and out of the classroom," Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "We are certain that they will serve our state well when they come to Washington to be honored for their accomplishments during Presidential Scholars National Recognition Week."

Each of the scholars has nominated one exceptional teacher to receive the program's Teacher Recognition Award. Jesse Kaplan nominated Mr. James O'Donnell from Brunswick High School and Bethany Roy nominated Mrs. Hannah Jones from Cape Elizabeth High School. The scholars and their influential teachers will be honored in Washington, DC through a variety of activities including panel discussions and a ceremony sponsored by the White House June 25th through the 28th.
