WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced several grants and loans totaling $1,288,220 have been awarded to Maine from the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development Project.

"Loans and grants provided by the USDA are integral to providing many services in rural communities that might otherwise have been unaffordable," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "This most recent round of funding will make it possible to rehabilitate housing, encourage energy efficiency, and help to purchase and build new facilities throughout Maine."

The following have been awarded funding:

• $20,000 grant to Penquis Community Action Program, Inc. to fund housing rehabilitation and repair activities in Penobscot County • $30,000 grant to the Town of Hodgdon to fund housing rehabilitation and repair activities in Aroostook County • $10,000 grant to Waldo County Action Partners to fund housing rehabilitation and repair activities in Waldo County • $63,220 grant to Windham Millwork, Inc. to assist farmers, ranchers, and small business in developing renewable energy systems, and in making energy-efficient improvements to their operations • $415,000 loan to United Cerebral Palsy of Northern Maine to purchase a facility in Brewer to be used as a Residential Training Program for Young adults with severe disabilities • $750,000 loan to the Town of Lowell to construct a new Municipal Building for a Town Office and Fire Station

The USDA Rural Development mission provides guaranteed loans, approved loans, and approved grants. The loans and grants are used for community programs, which seek to construct or improve community facilities for health care, public safety, and public services.
