"Port security is vital to the safety of our nation and the economy," said the Senators in a joint statement. "Maine has significant vulnerabilities in terms of port security, including 3,500 miles of continuous coastline and three deep-water seaports. The Port of Portland is the largest port in New England in terms of tonnage, the second largest oil port on the east coast, the second largest fishing port in New England, and the second largest passenger port in New England. Port security grants are vital to help state and local agencies protect our valuable residential, commercial, tourist, business, and fishing interests and assets."
Senators Snowe and Collins today announced the following port security grants:
· $400,000 to the City of Portland for screening equipment for passenger marine terminals
· $235,400 to the Maine State Ferry Service for closed circuit television surveillance systems, inspection mirrors, and fencing at the Rockland Terminal
· $110,000 to Irving Oil for physical enhancements at the Searsport Marine Terminal
DHS awards port security grants for Enhanced Facility and Operational Security projects that include access controls, physical security, surveillance, communications, cargo security, and passenger security.
