SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $6.1 MILLION IN JUSTICE GRANTS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced $6,122,969 in federal funding to various justice programs throughout Maine. The grants are awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice.

"This federal funding is critical to ensuring that state and local law enforcement authorities have the necessary resources to fully protect our communities," Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "Additionally, these federal awards will provide critical financial assistance to victims of crimes." The federal funding was allocated as follows: · $3,013,969 to the Maine Department of Public Safety for the Edward Byrne Memorial State & Local Law Enforcement Assistance Program. The funding will assist in efforts to control violent and drug-relate crime and support national drug-control priorities. · $1,955,000 to the Maine Department of Human Services for Crime Victim Services. The funding will assist local community-based organizations that provide direct services to crime victims. · $979,000 to the Maine Department of Public Safety for the STOP Violence Against Women Program. The federal funding will continue implementation of effective, victim-centered law enforcement, prosecution and court strategies to address violent crimes against women. · $175,000 to the Maine Office of the Attorney General for the Crime Victim Compensation Fund. The federal funding provides financial assistance to victims of both federal and state crimes.
