SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER GRANTS

U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded more than $276,000 in grants to Maine Housing Authority programs. The grants were administered through the FY 2007 Housing Choice Voucher – Family Self Sufficiency (FSS8) Program.

“The Family Self Sufficiency Program is helping thousands of families make the transition from financial inadequacy to living more stable, secure and fulfilling lives. This essential funding will help Maine’s neediest move one step closer to financial independence by providing them with a framework to acquire the job skills needed to earn a better way of life,” said Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.

The funding awards were administered as follows:

? $31,530 to the Augusta Housing Authority
? $44,211 to the Bangor Housing Authority
? $47,296 to the City of Caribou
? $8,869 to the Lewiston Housing Authority
? $54,033 to the Maine State Housing Authority
? $51,301 to the Portland Housing Authority
? $39,413 to the Westbrook Housing Authority

The Housing Choice Voucher-Family Self Sufficiency program is intended to promote the development of local strategies to coordinate the use of assistance under the Housing Choice Voucher programs with public and private resources to enable participating families to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency.
