WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the Maine Technology Institute (MTI) has been awarded $982,000 in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy. The funds distributed to MTI are to be used for Maine Forest Bioproducts research and development.

"The funds distributed today illustrate the federal government's continued dedication to the Maine Forest Bioproducts Initiative," Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "This valuable initiative is investigating how forest bioproducts can be utilized as an alternative source of energy."

Forest bioproducts research and development focuses on processes and enabling technologies that will establish forest biomass as a significant source of sustainable fuels, heat, power, chemicals and materials.
