"Law enforcement programs are some of the most vital, but often times underfunded, programs in our country," Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "The funds will be critical in supporting each of these programs to keep our youth off the streets and out of trouble while holding accountable those who do violate the law."
The funding was allocated as follows:
• $457,000 has been awarded to Maine Department of Corrections: $357,000 for the Juvenile Accountability Block Grant Program and $100,000 for Incentive Grants which provides Local Delinquency Prevention Programs.
• $350,000 has been awarded to Maine Department of Behavioral And Developmental Services Office of Substance Abuse for the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Block Grant Program.
• $175,000 has been awarded to Volunteers of America Northern New England Inc. for the Sagadahoc County Weed and Seed Web Site. The program organizes community action groups throughout the county to lead problem-solving efforts in partnership with local law enforcement.
The United States Department of Justice aims to ensure fair and impartial administration, enforce the law, defend the interests, and promote justice for all Americans. They ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic and provide Federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime.
