U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins (R-ME) announced today that the City of Calais has been awarded a $750,000 grant and a $750,000 loan for sewer upgrades on four of its city streets. The funding is a part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program.
“Public works are a vital element to the success of any city,” Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. “This funding will enable the City of Calais to continue its ongoing work to make critical upgrades to its public works infrastructure which will result in a safer, and cleaner, wastewater system.”
The City is operating under a compliance order from the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection, which mandates that many improvements be made to the City’s wastewater system.
