SNOWE & COLLINS ANNOUNCE $1.1 MILLION FOR KENNEBEC COUNTY HEAD START PROGRAM

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that the Southern Kennebec Child Development Corporation in Augusta will receive a $1,170,323 federal grant for its Head Start program and handicapped services. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Children and Families.

"The success of programs like this is vital to the success and well-being of families that rely upon these services," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "We continue to support the efforts of the hard-working staff who extend their care and compassion to the children and parents of Kennebec County, and will work to ensure that they receive the resources necessary to continue with their important work."

Southern Kennebec Child Development Corporation provides child care services and operates a Head Start program for children ages 6-weeks through 5-years-old in Centers and Family Child Care Homes in southern Kennebec County. The organization also provides financial assistance to eligible families through the Child Care Voucher Program.

Head Start is a national program that provides developmental services for low-income, pre-school children. The programs follow national guidelines, but are managed locally through community non-profit organizations. Core components of Head Start services include children's health services, education, parent involvement, and social services referral.
