SNOWE, COLLINS, AND ALLEN TO ASSIST DISLOCATED JORDAN’S WORKERS

Washington, DC – Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and Representative Tom Allen are working to assist workers who are expected to be laid-off from the Jordan's Meats plant in Portland and distribution center in South Portland. Tyson Foods, the company that owns Jordan's Meats, announced today that it will close the two locations on February 1, 2005, putting 285 people out of work.

"This is another devastating loss for workers in Maine. It is particularly difficult news to receive this time of year when the holidays are upon us," said the Maine delegation members in a joint statement. "In addition, the loss of the plant in Portland and distribution center in South Portland will deliver a tremendous blow to the local economies. And it is even more disheartening that Maine is losing one of its legendary local businesses – Jordan's hot dogs are a signature favorite and it's hard to think that they will not be made in Maine anymore."

Senators Snowe and Collins and Representative Allen are offering dislocated workers assistance in accessing federal support programs. They have already been in contact with local officials and the State Department of Labor to facilitate the coordination and cooperation of resources available, including the creation of a local task force, to help the workers and their families The delegation members are also prepared to help secure federal grants to aid workers with job retraining and job search services.
