SENSOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT RECEIVES $3.1 MILLION CONTRACT TO DEVELOP FOOD PATHOGEN DETECTORS, SENATOR COLLINS ANNOUNCES

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Susan Collins today announced that Sensor Research and Development Corporation of Orono has won a $3.1 million competitive contract to develop a prototype food pathogen detector, as part of the federal government's effort to develop technology to combat terrorism.

"This contract is another feather in Sensor Research and Development's cap," said Senator Susan Collins. "I have been proud to advocate on behalf of SRD in the United States Senate. SRD is true small business success story in our state, providing quality jobs to hardworking Maine people. We should take pride in knowing that Maine companies such as SRD are helping fight the war on terror by developing cutting-edge technologies right here in our own backyard."

Under this contract, SRD will develop a prototype food pathogen detector that can be mass produced and used with packaged or unpackaged foods. The detector would use thin organic polymer films that will allow rapid detection of contaminated foods.

The competitive grant was awarded by the U.S. Government's Interagency Technical Support Working Group (TSWG.)
