U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the City of Portland with $1,525,172 in grant funding from the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control program.
“This grant funding for the City of Portland will greatly assist the city as it identifies and corrects lead paint hazards in the area,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “With this increased support, the City will be able to better ensure the safety of its citizens’ homes. We are pleased to announce this funding.”
The purpose of the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control is to assist states, Native American tribes, and local governments in identifying and controlling lead-based paint hazards in eligible privately owned housing for rental or owner-occupants; and, to encourage grantees to work in partnership with grassroots community based, non-profit organizations.
The Senators recently sponsored legislation recently passed unanimously by that U.S. Senate that designates the week of October 21st as “National Childhood Lead Poisoning Week”. Senators Snowe and Collins joined with a bipartisan group of 24 senators to work to see this legislation pass the Senate.
