U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins (R-Maine) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded approximately $2.3 million in competitive grant funding to Maine communities for local airport improvements.
"Maine's aviation infrastructure keeps its residents connected with the rest of the country and the world," Senators Snowe and Collins said. "These FAA grants will help these small airports make the necessary upgrades and developments to improve their air travel services and safety."
The funding will be distributed as follows:
• $451,500 to the City of Bangor- This grant will provide federal funding for the rehabilitation of the apron needed to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement at the Bangor International Airport.
• $43,700 to the Town of Carrabassett- This grant will provide federal funding to rehabilitate the runway at the Sugarloaf Regional Airport.
• $80,800 to the City of Old Town- This grant will provide federal funding to rehabilitate the runway at the Old Town Municipal Airport.
• $81,100 to the Town of Lincoln- This grant will provide federal funding for the design phase of the rehabilitation of a runway at the Lincoln Regional Airport.
• $268,500 to the City of Caribou- This grant will provide federal funding to remove potential obstructions near the runway at the Caribou Municipal Airport.
• $461,600 to Knox County- This grant will provide federal funding to purchase snow removal equipment and runway repairs at the Knox County Regional Airport.
• $67,400 to the Town of Norridgewock- This grant will provide federal funding to install perimeter fencing and remove obstructions at the Central Maine Airport in Norridgewock.
• $650,000 to the Town of Bar Harbor- This grant will provide federal funding for the purchase of snow removal equipment and runway markers for Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport.
• $179,200 to the Town of Machias- This grant will provide federal funding to update the airport master plan and identify future needs at the Machias Valley Airport.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) aims to improve safety, increase mobility in support of the nation's economy, protect human and natural environment, achieve organizational excellence, and support the national security strategy.
