WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the Maine Department of Transportation a grant in the amount of $1,525,477 to help cover the cost of replacing the Governor Curtis ferry which carries passengers between Rockland and Vinalhaven.
“The Governor Curtis ferry is a vital transportation link for the residents who travel between Rockland and Vinalhaven,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “The current vessel is 40 years old and can no longer meet the year-round commuter needs. The new vessel will increase passenger capacity, safety and security, and reliability for the ferry’s customers.”
The Maine Department of Transportation is currently seeking bids on a new passenger ferry that will improve accessibility on all decks, and will be capable of carrying 250 passengers and approximately 20 cars.
