SENATOR SUSAN COLLINS'' STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT''S ADDRESS

"I applaud President Bush for his clear statement on how and why we will fight the battle against terrorism and in defense of freedom. The President''s powerful speech will help to keep the country united and maintain our resolve for the difficult task ahead.

"Let there be no doubt: We will defeat these terrorists and all others. We will defeat them wherever they are. We will defeat them however long it takes. Let these terrorists know: For more than 200 years, America has defended her freedom against every foe. America will prevail.

"That was made clear when I witnessed the dedication and determination of America''s soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines when I visited the Pentagon last Thursday, just two days after the attacks. It has been clear in all the meetings I''ve had with my constituents in Maine. It was made clear again this morning when I visited New York and witnessed the commitment and compassion of the relief and recovery workers at the World Trade Center.

"As the President said, ‘Freedom and fear are at war.'' Let there be no doubt: Freedom will prevail."
