Brad Cummings said the mill has enough orders for two or three weeks of production for its 35-member workforce, but will then shut down. The company had 200 employees before it downsized five years ago by selling its New Hampshire sawmill and buying raw material elsewhere.
Senator Collins has worked previously to obtain Trade Adjustment Assistance from the Department of Labor during the Company's downsizing.
"During the course of the last three years, C.B. Cummings and Sons Company has suffered a decline in sales that caused many workers to lose their jobs," said Senator Collins. "These job losses have created serious hardships for the employees and their families. I will continue in the face of this unfortunate news to work for the employees. It is distressing to see a business close its doors after such a long history of contributions to the community."
The plant and its machinery are to be sold at auction in November, according to Cummings. The Growth Council of Oxford Hills will be working closely with the company to try to attract bidders.
