SENATOR SUSAN COLLINS ANNOUNCES NEW COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Susan Collins today announced the finalization of her new Committee assignments in the 108th Congress. As the Senator enters her second term in the Senate, she will serve as Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee. As one of only twelve Senate Chairmen of major Committees, Senator Collins is limited to only one other seat on a major committee. Therefore, in order to maintain the traditional presence of a Maine Senator on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Collins was required to give up her seat on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee.

"I welcome the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee and to continue my advocacy for and oversight of our military and for Maine's defense-related programs and workers through my seat on the Armed Services Committee," said Senator Collins. "While I am disappointed in having to give up my seat on the HELP Committee, I still will be extremely active in health and education issues."

Indeed, the first bill introduced by Senator Collins in the new Congress was a bipartisan bill to allow greater access to affordable health care for the 41 million uninsured Americans.

Senator Collins will retain her seat on the Special Committee on Aging and will join the Joint Economic Committee.

The following is a list of Senator Collins's Committees: Armed Services, Governmental Affairs (Chairman), Special Committee on Aging, Joint Economic Committee
