Senator Collins Welcomes New Citizens at Naturalization Ceremony in Portland

Portland, ME – U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at a naturalization ceremony in Portland this afternoon.  The event, which was coordinated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, took place at the Ocean Gateway.  Approximately 65 new citizens and their families, Portland officials, the Portland Police Department Color Guard, the Portland Community Chorus, and guests attended the ceremony.

“True American citizenship is about much more than being born in the right place or taking an examination.  It is about coming together to strengthen our nation and our communities,” said Senator Collins.  “As citizens of this good nation, we can all be proud of our heritage and confident in our future.  We Americans will always stand together to do what is right, and to lend a hand to those in need.  It is an honor to welcome these new citizens to this great cause, and I congratulate you all.”

The new citizens originate from 28 different countries and reside in cities and towns in Hancock, Kennebec, York, Cumberland, Lincoln, Androscoggin, and Penobscot Counties.
