Skowhegan, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins visited the newly opened Margaret Chase Smith Community School in Skowhegan to tour the campus and read to a first-grade classroom. Senator Collins, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, secured $1.94 million in Congressionally Directed Spending in Fiscal Year 2024 to support the construction of the Early Childhood Center portion of the school, which is the first center of its kind in a newly constructed Maine public school.

“Visiting the Margaret Chase Smith Community School today, I had the pleasure of reading to first graders, and it was wonderful to see their shared excitement for learning,” said Senator Collins. “I am proud that through my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee, I was able to secure funding to support the construction of the school’s new Early Childhood Center, which will help give young students in the region the strong educational foundation they deserve.”

Bringing together nearly 800 students from Bloomfield Elementary, Canaan Elementary, North Elementary, and the Margaret Chase Smith School, the newly completed Margaret Chase Smith Community school opened its doors last month and serves students through grade 5.
