DIXMONT, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins visited the Dixmont Fire Station, where Town Selectboard Chair Serena Bemis along with members and supporters of the Dixmont Volunteer Fire Department led her on a tour of the existing facility and highlighted longstanding issues with the building that have led to the need for a new station.
“Volunteer firefighters are the backbone of communities like Dixmont, answering the call at all hours to protect their neighbors. The current station has served the town for many years, but seeing it firsthand today, it is clear that the facility no longer meets the needs of the firefighters or the community it serves,” said Senator Collins. “The federal funding I secured will help Dixmont build a modern facility that improves emergency response and firefighter safety, while ensuring the dedicated men and women of the Dixmont Volunteer Fire Department have the space and equipment they need to do their work effectively.”
As Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Collins secured more than $2.3 million to support the construction of a new fire and rescue station in Dixmont through recently enacted appropriations legislation. A steadfast supporter of Maine’s firefighters, Senator Collins has secured nearly $87 million to rehabilitate, expand, or replace 45 fire stations across the State of Maine in the past five years.
