Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, delivered remarks at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) Congressional Flag Presentation. The flag presentation is an annual event that honors firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

This year, 226 American flags that had flown over the U.S. Capitol were presented to the NFFF to honor the 226 firefighters lost last year. Those flags will be presented to the families of each fallen firefighter at a memorial service on May 5th.

“From the Twin Towers to devastating wildfires and local emergencies, Americans have seen firefighters run toward danger while others flee, and our nation is united in gratitude,” said Senator Collins. “As co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I know that our gratitude must be matched by the resources firefighters and their families need. We are deeply indebted to the courageous, skillful, and disciplined men and women who protect our communities every day, and we will never forget the fallen.”

In March, U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that she secured $18,493,000 for twelve fire stations and emergency services facilities throughout Maine in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Agriculture and Rural Development and the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) appropriations bills, that were signed into law by the President.
