SENATOR COLLINS RECEIVES LEADERSHIP AWARD FROM AMERICAN ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Collins is pleased to be the recipient of the 2006 National Leadership in Government Service Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians.  The award was presented in a ceremony today during the annual Family Medicine Congressional Conference in Washington, D.C., a joint meeting with the Academic Family Medicine Advocacy Alliance.               Dr. Dan Onion, program director emeritus from Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency in Augusta, introduced Senator Collins to the audience of about 100 family physicians, educators, academic administrators and researchers from around the country and presented her with the award.               “I am proud to accept this leadership award from the American Academy of Family Physicians, an organization that is dedicated to promoting and maintaining high quality standards for family doctors,” said Senator Collins.  “I am particularly pleased that my good friend, Dr. Dan Onion, has traveled from Maine to be here today.  In 1998, Dan and I worked closely to pass legislation to restore GME funding to programs like his Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency program, which are so important to rural and underserved areas in Maine and across the country.”               The American Academy of Family Physicians is the national association of family doctors. It is one of the largest national medical organizations, with more than 94,000 members.   ###   (Editor Note:  Senator Collins is pictured receiving the award from Dr. Dan Onion)
