WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Susan Collins today announced that she remains committed to assisting the approximately 400 Georgia-Pacific workers who lost their jobs due to the closure of the Old Town mill. On March 15, G-P informed employees that it would cease pulp and paper manufacturing and associated tissue shipping operations at its Old Town mill. However, the company said it was committed to maintaining the mill in good working condition for 60 days as it worked closely with the State of Maine to secure a suitable buyer.
Following is Senator Collins’ statement.
“I am pleased and encouraged that negotiations to sell the Old Town mill are moving forward. I will continue to work with the Governor and the rest of the Maine delegation to do all that I can to ensure a successful sale. I am also committed to assisting the skilled and dedicated workers, who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, as well as their families.”
