Senator Collins Mourns The Passing Of Matthew Denger

WASHINGTON, D.C.-U.S. Senator Susan Collins released this statement following the death of Matthew Denger.  Matthew, a student at the University of New England, died Monday after a long battle with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

"My heart breaks for Matthew's parents, Brian and Alice, and for his brother, Patrick and sister, Rachel.

"I have known Matthew and his family for many years.  The Dengers are passionate advocates for Duchenne muscular dystrophy research and treatment, and I am proud to be their voice in Washington.

"Matthew accomplished so much in his young life and, because of his dedication and enthusiasm, we have made considerable progress in the fight against Duchenne and other forms of muscular dystrophy.

"His work for this important cause ignited his passion for politics, so much so that he became a volunteer in my York County office for many years so that he could continue to help others.  He did so always with a bright smile on his face.

"His disease did not define Matthew, and he lived his life to the absolute fullest.  I will miss him dearly, but I will never forget him and will continue to be a champion for this cause for which he fought so hard."
