Senator Collins Meets With Chief Justice Nominee Roberts

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Susan Collins met with Judge John G. Roberts Jr. today in her Washington, D.C. office. President Bush nominated Judge Roberts to become the nation's 17th chief justice following the death of William H. Rehnquist.

Following her meeting with Judge Roberts, Senator Collins released this statement: "My meeting with Judge Roberts today was a very good and informative one. He is straight forward, has an extraordinary legal mind, and a respect for the rule of law. I also believe that he is an individual who approaches the law with great humility.

"I am impressed with Judge Roberts' straightforward responses to a broad range of questions that I discussed with him. He has a deep respect for the Judiciary and the rule of law, and I appreciated the opportunity to explore his judicial philosophy.

"While I will reserve final judgment until his hearings have been completed, Judge Roberts has the judicial temperament, professional excellence, and integrity required for the Supreme Court."

The Senate is scheduled to begin confirmation hearings for Judge Roberts on Monday, September 12, 2005.
