Castine, ME — U.S. Senator Susan Collins introduced Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer at today’s graduation ceremony at Maine Maritime Academy.  Secretary Spencer delivered the commencement address.

“I was delighted to join the Class of 2019 on this day of celebration.  It was a particular pleasure to welcome Secretary Spencer back to Maine and to congratulate him on the honorary degree he received today,” said Senator Collins.  “With all the places around the globe a Navy Secretary could be, we were grateful that he chose to join us at Maine Maritime Academy.”

“Later this afternoon, some graduates will take the oath of office and receive commissions in the United States Navy.  Others will receive their Coast Guard licenses so that they can work as U.S. Merchant Mariners,” Senator Collins continued.  “The Navy depends on the U.S. Merchant Marine to provide sealift mobilization, and graduates today will continue to represent Maine’s seafaring heritage by contributing to the Navy and the entire maritime industry.”

Senator Collins delivered the commencement address at Maine Maritime Academy in 2017, as well as in 2007, when she received an honorary degree.  Yesterday, she joined Secretary Spencer for a visit to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.
