SENATOR COLLINS HONORED FOR DIABETES EFFORTS

WASHINGTON, DC—Senator Susan Collins was honored today for her role as founder and co-chair of the Senate Diabetes Caucus at an event hosted by the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Senator Collins founded the Caucus in 1999 to increase research funding and promote better health care for people with diabetes.

"I have learned a great deal about diabetes and the difficulties and heartbreak it causes for so many American families as they await a cure. Thankfully, there is good news for people with diabetes. We have seen some encouraging breakthroughs in diabetes research, and we are on the threshold of a number of important new discoveries," Senator Collins said. "I will continue to work with the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to find better treatments, a means of prevention, and ultimately a cure for diabetes."

Senator Collins has introduced a number of important bills that were signed into law, which resulted in increased funding for diabetes research and to promote better health care for people with diabetes. Just last year, President Bush signed into law Senator Collins'' Pancreatic Islet Cell Transplantation Act. Senator Collins has also chaired three Children's Congress hearings in the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Senator Collins is a recipient of both the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's (JDRF) Congressional Leadership Award and the American Diabetes Association''s National Public Leadership Award.
