SENATOR COLLINS EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL PAPER WORKERS

Washington, DC - Senator Susan Collins today expressed her concern for the fate of International Paper (IP) workers in Maine, following the company's announcement this morning that it would be selling its mills in Jay and Bucksport. IP says it employs around 1900 people in the state. Senator Collins spoke with the IP Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who told her that the company is trying to sell the mills and that it is uncertain whether there will be any resulting layoffs.

The following is Senator Collins' statement:

"International Paper has been an economic anchor for many communities and families in Maine. It is troubling that after so many years of dedicated service these workers are now left wondering what will happen to their jobs.

"I expressed my concern to International Paper's CEO about the impact of the mill sales on workers. He said he is confident that buyers will be found easily and predicted there would not be an impact on employment levels. I reminded him that IP's workers in Maine are well known for their high productivity and strong work ethic, and stressed the importance that these assets not be overlooked by the company or potential buyers. I will continue to advocate for the mill workers throughout the sale process. In the meantime, my office stands at the ready to help workers through this uncertain period."
