WASHINGTON, D.C.—In an effort to encourage parents to read to their children, Senator Susan Collins is pleased to announce that the U.S. Senate has unanimously passed her resolution declaring Friday, March 2nd “Read Across America Day.”
This is the 10th anniversary of “Read Across America Day.” The National Education Association (NEA) chose March 2nd to commemorate the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The NEA hopes the campaign will encourage children to read and encourage parents to read to their children.
“Reading is a wonderful and worthwhile experience. During my ten years in the U.S. Senate, I have visited 152 schools in Maine to encourage students to read. These visits are among the most rewarding experiences in my career in public service,” said Senator Collins. “It is my hope that “Read Across America Day” will continue to help families get into a daily practice of reading to their children. I applaud schoolteachers, librarians, and most of all, our parents, for their commitment to teaching America’s children the joys of reading.”
