‘When we send a young man or woman into harm's way, our nation has in return a sacred obligation to them and to their families,' Senator Collins said. ‘We must ensure they go forth with the complete confidence, should the worst happen and they are called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice, that their country will care for their families and honor their service.'
‘I have long supported an increase in the payment made to the families of those who have lost their lives in service to our country; and I am very pleased to see the growing consensus that we should enact significant legislation in this regard. It is terrific to hear the Administration's support for doing this promptly as well,' continued Senator Collins.
In the 108th Congress, Senator Collins was the Senate sponsor of legislation to double the death gratuity to $12,000 and make it tax free.
