SENATOR COLLINS CONGRATULATES MAINER FOR PRESTIGIOUS MILITARY FAMILY MEMBER AWARD

Washington, DC-Senator Susan Collins met today with Jennifer Stegeman of Dayton, who received the VFW Military Family Member Volunteer Service Award for the Army. While Jennifer's husband, Rick, was serving a 20-month deployment in Iraq with the 94th Military Policy Company, she supported the loved ones and family members of the soldiers in the 94th. Senator Collins wrote a letter to the VFW strongly supporting Jennifer's nomination.

"I congratulate Jennifer on receiving this award, and commend her on her patriotism, courage, and compassion. Jennifer was a bedrock of stability for the other family members of the 94th during the company's lengthy 20-month deployment," Senator Collins said. "The often-forgotten heroes of war are those loved ones that stay behind at home. Jennifer's husband and his fellow soldiers should be proud of the manner in which she supported the family members that stayed on the homefront."

The VFW Military Family Member Volunteer Service Award is only distributed to one family member from each of the five military branches. The award recognizes family members who have contributed significantly to the support of the military community and the family support program over time.
