Senator Collins Backs Resolution to Establish a Human Rights Commission in Honor of the Late Senator John McCain

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) cosponsored a bipartisan resolution to establish a John S. McCain III Human Rights Commission, which would provide a forum to examine human rights violations through regular hearings and briefings and promote human rights initiatives in the Senate.

The resolution was introduced by Senators Chris Coons (D-DE), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Ed Markey (D-MA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ).

“The John S. McCain III Human Rights Commission would reaffirm our commitment to working towards a world that guarantees human rights for all, while also honoring an American hero who worked tirelessly to achieve this goal,” said Senator Collins.  “I am proud to support this bipartisan resolution, which recognizes the legacy of a great patriot and a dear friend of mine by promoting human rights worldwide.”

The John S. McCain III Human Rights Commission would provide a forum for regular hearings, briefings, and bipartisan discussion on international human rights issues.  This would include raising awareness about violations and collaborations with other entities to promote human rights initiatives within the Senate.
