U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, recently announced that FEMA will hold Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Workshops at nine locations in Maine. The workshops will help Maine fire departments best apply for the Department of Homeland Security’s AFG Program. In the past month alone, 16 Maine fire departments have been awarded over $1.6 million in AFG funding.
“The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is an extremely critical source of funds for our fire and rescue personnel,” noted Senator Collins. “These grants continually help provide Maine’s critical first responders with the equipment and skills to better serve their communities. These upcoming workshops will help provide valuable information to assist in application of these grants.”
Workshops are scheduled to take place:
• March 3rd - Sanford
• March 4th - Bangor
• March 5th - Presque Isle
• March 6th - Machias
• March 7th - Augusta
• March 18th - South Paris
• March 18th - Brunswick
• March 19th - Rockland
• March 19th - South Portland

Senator Collins strongly supported the creation of the AFG Program. These grants are awarded to fire departments across the United States to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, emergency medical service programs, and Fire Prevention and Safety programs, and to purchase new fire equipment.
