SENATOR COLLINS ANNOUNCES APPLICATION PERIOD OPEN FOR ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANTS

U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, today announced that the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Grants and Training is now accepting applications for the Fiscal Year 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grants.               In 2006, Maine received 50 separate Fire Act grant awards, totaling $5,860,578.  In 2007, DHS will award more than $492 million in Fire Act grants around the country.               “We are all indebted to Maine’s firefighters for their tireless commitment to protecting our communities, and I have long supported programs, such as the Assistance to Firefighters Grants, that provide vital resources to our firefighting community,” said Senator Collins.  “These resources will help enable fire departments to obtain updated firefighting equipment and improve firefighting training so that they are able to fulfill their responsibilities to our communities.”               Maine fire departments wishing to apply for these funds can do so at www.firegrantsupport.com.  The deadline for receipt of applications is no later than May 4, 2007 at 5:00 p.m.   ###
