Senate Passes Collins, Murray Resolution to Recognize “National School Counseling Week”

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution – authored by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Patty Murray (D-WA) – designating February 7 through February 11, 2022, as “National School Counseling Week.” The resolution highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve academic success and plan for a career.

“School counselors across the country play an important role in our education system as well as in the lives of our students. Their tireless efforts help young people focus on academic, social, and career development so that they can achieve their goals. During the pandemic, the contributions of school counselors have been even more invaluable by addressing the growing mental health crisis and helping students overcome barriers to learning caused by pandemic restrictions,” said Senator Collins. “Our resolution recognizes all of the dedicated and compassionate school counselors who foster an enriching and accessible learning environment for our children.”

“Right now, our kids are facing steep challenges—they’re stressed, it’s been an incredibly tough two years, and they need support. That’s what school counselors provide every single day and their work is absolutely critical. That was true before the pandemic, and it’s even clearer now,” said Senator Murray. “I’m proud to introduce this resolution with Senator Collins to recognize those who work hard to support our students’ mental health, and help them climb higher and achieve long-term success. I’m going to keep pushing to give all who work in our schools the support they need to provide our students with the high-quality education they deserve.”
