"This is simple common sense legislation. It prohibits health insurers from denying benefits to people if they are injured while engaging in sports like skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, or motorcycling," said Senator Collins.
Senator Collins' bill more clearly defines health insurance regulations to ensure that people participating in legal recreational activities are covered under an equal standard of protection. The Health Care Parity for Legal Transportation and Recreational Activities Act prevents the industry practice of denying coverage for injuries received because of certain sports.
"This legislation closes a loophole that allows insurance companies to deny coverage for someone who is hurt while snowmobiling, but covers someone who is injured while drinking and driving their car," said Senator Collins. "Americans pay enough for their health insurance, that they should receive the same coverage and benefits whether they break their arm skiing or from falling down the back stairs."
The bill now moves to the full Senate for consideration.
