PUBLIC CITIZEN PRAISES SENATOR COLLINS’ LEADERSHIP

U.S. Senator Susan Collins was recently recognized by Public Citizen, a non-partisan consumer advocacy organization, for her leadership in coauthoring the Consumer Product Safety Reform Act (CPSC), S.2663. Senator Collins recently received a letter from the leadership of Public Citizen noting their praise.

The CPSC Act, which passed the Senate on March 6th, strengthens the Consumer Product Safety Commission and provides federal officials with more power to investigate and remedy unsafe consumer products, including toys.

Senator Collins authored a number of provisions to strengthen and improve the bill.

“I am pleased to receive this recognition,” noted Senator Collins. “Toy safety has made a giant leap forward with the Senate’s approval of the CPSC bill. This bill will help the federal government better detect and prevent threats to our children before, not after, toys reach store shelves.”

The text of Public Citizen’s letter follows:

Dear Senator Collins,

Public Citizen would like to thank you for your leadership in co-sponsoring the Consumer Product Safety Reform Act (CPSC), S. 2662, and work to assure its passage by the Senate. This bill, if enacted into law, will provide American consumers and their children with greater protection against unsafe consumer products in the marketplace.

Your statesman-like willingness to work access party lines to foster protection of those who cannot protect themselves is in the finest tradition of the Congress.

We look forward to working with you to ensure that the Senate bill forms the basis of the final CPSC bill – and to working with you on future legislation for consumers.

With best regards,
