U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins (R-ME) announced today that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded three grants totaling $579,778 to New Beginnings, Inc. in Lewiston, Volunteers of America Northern New England, Inc. in Brunswick and Penquis Community Action Program in Bangor.
“Community action groups play a vital role in helping Maine’s less fortunate gain access to key services and programs that can turnaround their lives,” Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. “No one should be denied the opportunity to seek a better way of life and the work that these groups do help to make that promise a reality.”
New Beginnings Inc. will receive a transitional living program grant for $200,000. The Volunteers of America Northern New England, Inc. will receive $199,999 for its homeless youth transitional living program. The Penquis Community Action Program was awarded $179,779 for its maternity group home that serves Penobscot and Piscataquis counties.
